Rio Carnival takes a stand - 4th March 2020

Rio de Janeiro is a city in Brazil. It has a big carnival every year.

The carnival is very colourful. This year, it had a political message too.

Brazil has a far-right government. Jair Bolsonaro is Brazil’s president. He became president last year. The government and Carnival are opposites. The government doesn’t like different types of people. Carnival thinks people, rights and art are important.

Carnival is worried about the environment too. People are cutting down trees in the Amazon. Bolsonaro’s government doesn’t stop them.

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro is Marcelo Crivella. He doesn’t like Carnival. This year, he didn’t give samba schools any money. The samba schools did not close. They worked hard for twelve months. They practised and made costumes. The schools wanted to be Carnival Champions. This year, Viradouro Samba School won the competition.
