Women car dummies made in Sweden - 28th November 2022

Car makers use crash dummies for tests. Instead of people, they put the dummies in cars. They show engineers about accidents. They give important information to car makers. The information keeps drivers and passengers safe.

A Swedish team made a new 'woman' dummy. It's the first of its kind.

Most crash dummies are from the 1970s. They are dummies of typical men. Occasionally, the companies use a second dummy for women. But it's too small. It's the size of a 12 year old girl in the US.

Dr Astrid Linder's job is to keep roads safe in Sweden. She says the roads can be dangerous for women. Her team's new dummy weighs 62 kilograms and is 1.62 metres tall. That's more like a typical woman.

For now, companies have to do tests with just the 'man' dummy. But maybe things will change.
