Unhappy farmers in Europe - 19th February 2024

Farmers are blocking streets with tractors. Life’s very expensive for them. These farmer protests started in Poland. Now, they’re in France, Belgium, Germany and the UK too.

Food for animals is expensive. Energy and transport costs are high too.

But farmers are making less money. Governments want low prices. Climate change brings extra costs. And supermarkets are buying cheap food from other countries.

Farmers don’t like new rules from the EU. The ‘European green deal’ will stop farmers using four percent of their land. In future, only trees and flowers can grow on this land.

Now, the EU is delaying this rule. And the French government’s giving its farmers 150 million euros. It’s making extra quality checks on food from other countries too.

49 percent of UK farmers may stop farming. They can’t get a good price from supermarkets for their food. They need extra help. And customers in supermarkets need low prices.
