Space is big business - 13th April 2022
This is the first private mission to the International Space Station. Its four members were sent from Axiom Space. This private company is working with SpaceX and NASA.
The mission's leader is ex-NASA astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria. His three crewmen are all paying for the opportunity. These men are rich investors. Larry Connor's an American, Mark Pathy's from Canada, and Eytan Stibbe's from Israel.
The tickets are said to cost $55 million each. They include 8 days on the International Space Station. But this is a working holiday, and the Axiom crew are doing 25 research projects. They're testing out smart tiles which create space accommodation. They're also looking for early signs of diseases like cancer.
The space station has 7 astronauts. Its crew includes three Americans, three Russians and one German. They welcomed the Axiom crew on board.
The International Space Station will close sometime after 2030. Axiom's planning a private space station to replace it.
