Breaking at the Olympics - 31st May 2023

Breaking will be in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Breaking's a type of street dance. It started in the USA in the 1970s. It comes from hip hop culture. The name for a breakdancer is a B-boy or a B-girl.

B-boys and B-girls in Africa want to go to the Olympics. They went to a competition in Morocco.

B-girl Courtnaé Paul wants to win for South Africa.

Courtnaé Paul: "This is my first time in Morocco. I'm very excited to be here. I've been on the WDSF journey for the last three years. I've won my nationals twice. I went to Seoul to compete, I just came back from Japan. So, this is a really big one for me and yeah, I am hoping to bring it home."

Breaking is a hard dance. It has quick and strong moves. It began with hip hop music. But now, the DJs play different kinds of music. DJs mix jazz, electro and disco.

In the competition, two B-boys or B-girls dance. The dancer with the best moves wins. It's a dance battle.

JC Kanane is a B-boy from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He likes meeting other dancers.

JC Kanane: "To meet dancers from different countries is already a good thing, because there are competitors from Angola, the Ivory Coast, Morocco, Algeria and Nigeria. So we meet here, we're united. It also allows us to get to know each other as dancers and it creates a union between us as a community. So, for me it's a pleasure to be here."

Who'll win the first gold at the Olympics? We'll see in 2024.
