World says 'no' to plastic - 11th April 2022

Countries will now work together against plastic. They want to stop this problem. Plastic is a world problem. We produce 400 million tonnes every year.

We use 40 percent of plastic once and then we throw it away. Now, countries are worried about the environment, animals and plants. Countries are worried about humans and plastic too.

There’s lots of plastic in the food chain. Animals often eat plastic and then we eat the animals.

World leaders from about 200 countries agreed to help. Before 2024, they have to make some important decisions. For example, who will pay for it? And what happens if a country breaks the rules?

Professor Steve Fletcher works at Portsmouth University. He helps the United Nations to understand environmental problems. For him, it's important to fight the problem together.
