New giant tortoises - 30th May 2022

Scientists found a new type of giant tortoise in the Galapagos Islands. The giant tortoises live on San Cristobal island in the Galapagos.

In the past, we thought there was one type of giant tortoise on the island. But this was wrong.

Scientists at two big universities did the study. They looked at old tortoise shells and they studied the tortoises on the island.

They noticed some of the shells were different. They were different types of tortoise.

The Galapagos Islands are in the Pacific Ocean. In 1845, Charles Darwin studied birds, plants and animals on the islands. He wrote an important book about them. The Galapagos Islands and giant turtles became famous.

Gustavo Manrique Miranda is Ecuador's environment minister. He's very happy about the new tortoises.

In future, we will understand more about the new giant tortoises. Maybe they will get a new name.
