Telescope changes view of space - 20th July 2022

This rocket put the James Webb telescope into space. The telescope can see far into the universe. It took off in December 2021. After 7 months, it's sending back photos. Now, we can see amazing images of outer space.

The first image shows thousands of galaxies. The telescope can see 13 billion years into the past. This is only 800 million years after the start of the universe.

The James Webb telescope cost $10 billion. The main mirror's 6.5 metres wide. It has 18 parts.

After a long time, light changes into infrared light. The telescope looks into space with infrared cameras. This way, it can get better pictures.

The picture shows a tiny part of the universe. The area's the size of a tiny piece of sand.

Astronomers are excited about the pictures. They're very high quality. One picture shows a dying star.

NASA Live: "We are ready to see Webb's first image of a star dying. A planetary nebula called the Southern Ring – wow!"

Scientists are excited about information from James Webb. It looked at a gas planet 1,150 light years away. It found water in the gas. It can help to find water on other planets.

Scientists around the world can use the telescope. Their experiments will add to information from other space telescopes. They'll answer some of the big questions about the universe.

NASA Live: "The last image is, wow! Look at that!"
