There was a big storm in Libya on 10th September, 2023.

It rained a lot.

There was a big flood.

Many people died.

There was four hundred millimetres of rain in one day.

This isn't normal.

Libya only has 1.5 millimetres of rain in September.

There was another problem too.

The walls of two dams broke.

The dams held lots of water.

All this water poured into the city of Derna.

The water damaged lots of buildings.

It took away cars.

It looks like there was an earthquake.

Eleven thousand people are dead.

But this number will go up.

Ten thousand people are missing.

Many people can't find their friends or family members.

The city needs help.

But this help isn't organised.

Libya has two different governments.

They both want control of the country.

They aren't working together.

Libya's prime minister isn't asking for lots of help.

But the situation needs a lot of help.

The United Nations is worried.

Now, thirty thousand people in Derna are homeless.

And the water in Derna isn't safe to drink.

People can get diseases from the dirty water.

The United Nations says this is a big problem for people in Derna.
