Priest feeds locals fish in lockdown - 28th August 2020
A priest in El Salvador found a clever method of supporting local people during lockdown. The shortage of fresh food meant many families couldn’t afford to eat.
Santa Ana priest, Moises Rutilio Moran, first collected supplies for local people but he was soon also out of money. He was unable to pay the electricity, water and other church bills but refused to ask for donations.
Moran was inspired to dig a pond and sell tilapia fish to locals.
Moran: "The project was born from the need to earn an income that we were no longer receiving because people can't come to the church, and the fact that churches are closed, and with the goal of supporting the church."
Staff in many other churches have been made unemployed. However, Moran’s scheme has generated employment for local people.
Moran has a sense of pride about his achievement. Even so, he is praying for the church to reopen. He’s keen to serve his congregation in these worrying times.
