The United Nations is helping our oceans.

Countries are agreeing some new rules.

The rules keep sealife in the oceans safe.

The name of the new rules is the High Seas Treaty.

The treaty stops fishing and shipping in 30 percent of the world's oceans.

The UN wrote an ocean treaty in 1982.

It was the Law of the Sea.

It gave all countries access to the oceans.

But the treaty only helped sealife in 1.2 percent of these areas.

The new treaty took many years to make.

Countries want to look after the oceans.

But they don't want this to be expensive for them.

Rich countries take a lot from the oceans.

Some countries want to keep their income from sea plants and animals.

Other countries want to share everything in the sea.

Countries now need to sign the treaty.

It's a very positive step for the oceans.
