Criminals buy Dominica's passports - 6th Nov 2023
Dominica is an island in the Caribbean. And it's now selling passports for $100,000. With a Dominican passport, people can travel to 130 countries. They don't need visas. And that's for EU countries too.
The passports make money for Dominica – $1 billion over 20 years. But there's one problem. Criminals like the passport programme too.
Getting a passport is easy. You wait four to six months. You don't have to visit Dominica.
Criminals from all over the world have Dominican passports. One was a scientist for Saddam Hussein. Another was a Turkish millionaire. And one was a lawyer in California.
Dominica's prime minister is Rooseveelt Skerrit. He says Dominica's programme checks people. But Dominica has to do more. It needs to ask people more questions.
The EU wants these visa programmes to stop. So, things might change soon. Dominica will need new ways to make money.
