The giant tortoises live on San Cristobal island in the Galapagos.

In the past, we thought there was one type of giant tortoise on the island.

But this was wrong.

Scientists at two big universities did the study.

They looked at old tortoise shells and they studied the tortoises on the island.

They noticed some of the shells were different.

They were different types of tortoise.

The Galapagos Islands are in the Pacific Ocean.

In 1845, Charles Darwin studied birds, plants and animals on the islands.

He wrote an important book about them.
