People in Philippines want divorce - 3rd July 2023

Some people in the Philippines would like a divorce. But it’s hard to get divorced there.

Stella Sibonga has three children. But she wants to leave her husband. The Philippine government won’t let her. There are many Filipinos like Sibonga.

Vatican City is the only other country to stop divorce.

Unhappy couples can get separated. But it’s not the same. And it’s hard to get separated too. After getting separated, you can’t marry again. And you can’t sleep with someone else.

Now, Sibonga has a different partner. They love each other. But they can’t get married. She’s unhappy about this.

The country’s 78 percent Catholic. The Philippines' history with divorce is complicated. In 2022, President Marcos said things could change. But it's clear it will still be difficult. It isn't easy for people like Sibonga. She wants the law to help her.

"All we want is to be free," she said.
