The UK's 15 year old scientist - 24th July 2023

There's a new, eco-friendly sunscreen. Sunscreen keeps our skin safe from the sun. Kaycee Deery made this special sunscreen. And she won the UK Young Scientist 2023 award.

Sunscreens are important. But lots of sunscreens are bad for the environment. They can hurt fish and other sea life.

Deery found another way to make sunscreens safe. She used natural oils in her sunscreen. These oils are safe for the environment.

Deery had to test a lot of natural oils. She made a UVA light box. She used this to test the oils.

UVA light makes the skin look old. UVB light burns the skin. It can give people skin cancer.

Deery read about the problem with sunscreen and sea life. She wants to stop this problem. She wants to stop skin cancer. And she wants to save sea life too.

There are other ways to keep yourself safe from the sun. Clothes block the sun. They keep your skin safe. You can stay out of the sun too.

Deery's science teacher is happy for her.
