True history - 7th August 2023

Britain was a powerful country in the late 18th century. It made a lot of wrought iron. This made the country rich. But ironmaking didn’t start in Britain.

A team of experts studied the history of Britain’s iron business. They found some new information. They said that this success started in Jamaica.

76 slaves in Jamaica started to make wrought iron in a new way. This made the process quick. The Jamaican slaves came from Central and West Africa. Africa made a lot of iron then. The men took this knowledge. They changed old metal into new metal quickly.

People think Henry Cort started this new iron work. But Cort learnt about it in Jamaica. He saw the workers in Jamaica. Cort went back to England and started an iron company. He got rich and famous. But now, experts found information about the metal workers in Jamaica. They want to celebrate these people.
